Statement of Learning Objectives

Task 1: Online reading activity

This online reading activity consists of two parts: the reading passage about Dadaism and the quiz. The main objective of this task is to provide the language learners with an opportunity to practice their reading comprehension skills and enrich their English vocabulary. By doing this activity, learners are also expected to acquire some knowledge about the art movement called Dadaism.

To help achieve these objectives, I made several choices concerning this task’s design. The whole activity is given in a separate pop-up window so that the learners’ attention is not distracted on navigating or manipulating the activity. The schema activation part of the activity is presented as a short slide show with each slide being visible for three to five seconds. The purpose of the schema activation part is to trigger the learners’ background knowledge about the art.

The reading passage contains pictures to facilitate students’ understanding of the context of the text. In addition, there are ten glosses containing definitions of words and some images that appear when a learner moves a mouse over highlighted words. After reading the text, the learners are given a quiz designed by using Hot Potatoes that allows easy navigation from one question to another. The purpose of the quiz is to check the learners’ comprehension of the text content.

Task 2: Online video activity

This is an online video activity that consists of three parts: Video 1 and Video 2 that talk about gift giving at US universities and the quiz. The main objective of this task is to provide the language learners with an opportunity to practice their listening comprehension skills and understanding pragmatics about gift giving, as well as to enrich their lexical knowledge of English.

To help achieve these objectives, I made several choices concerning the design of Task 2. The whole activity is given in a separate pop-up window so that the learners’ attention is not distracted on navigating or manipulating the activity. The schema activation part of the activity is presented as a short slide show with each slide being visible for three to five seconds. The purpose of the schema activation part is to activate the learners’ knowledge about gift giving.

For both videos there are transcripts available for the students if they have problems with comprehending the content of the videos. The transcripts include some glosses with definitions of words that appear when students move a mouse over highlighted words. After watching the videos, the learners are given a short quiz designed by using forms. The purpose of the quiz is to check the learners’ comprehension of the content of the videos and their understanding of gift giving at US universities.
